Voice of the Voters: The Bonifaz Blog

Yesterday was the deadline to turn signatures in to city and town clerks. John Bonifaz needs 5,000 certified signatures to help get on the Democratic primary ballot, and to make sure, the campaign set an ambitious goal of collecting 10,000 raw signatures. We did it!
Volunteers for John Bonifaz, Democratic candidate for Secretary of State, have gathered more than 10,000 signatures from voters [...]
"Our campaign is focused on returning voters to power and, with this signature drive, we have demonstrated the growing grassroots support across the state for my candidacy," said Bonifaz. We set the goal of 10,000 signatures - double the number we needed - and we met that goal, with people working from the Berkshires to Cape Cod."
Thank you to all the volunteers across the state who collected signatures! And thank you to everyone who told us about their signature gathering experiences, here on the blog!

The deadline is almost here: We only have until Tuesday, May 9th, at 5pm to turn signatures in to city and town clerks. We may already have enough signatures but since we don't yet know how many of them will be certified, the more the better!
If you've never done it before, my post on Blue Mass Group describes the process. Cambridge Democracy for America, who recently endorsed John, will be gathering signatures in Harvard Square this weekend at MayFair - if you're near Cambridge, join them there! To find out where other people will be collecting signatures, contact us.
Tell us about your plans, or how it went, by commenting here.

What a bright weekend!
On Saturday morning, John Bonifaz spoke at the Candidate Delegate Breakfast sponsored by the Holliston Democratic Town Committee and the Middlesex and Norfolk Democratic Alliance. Blue Mass Group user dcsohl was there, and wrote about what he heard and his impressions of the candidates. About John's speech, he wrote, Bonifaz: Impressive. Very fiery and energetic speech, focussing mostly on voting issues since that is the area he's spent a lot of personal time on. When the legislature turned down the Clean Elections voter initiative, he led the fight to re-instate it and he took part in the recount efforts in Ohio. He cited weaknesses in the Help America Vote Act, and the issues with electronic voting in general. On the non-voting issues, he cited the need for better corporate accountability in this state.
A number of other Democratic candidates, including two of the candidates for governor, spoke at the breakfast. Read his post for his full report.

Last weekend, New Orleans held the first round of its mayoral election. You may have heard that voter turnout was 36%, lower than usual, but not disastrously low. The real story, however, is that voter turnout was very high in the city, and very very low among over 100,000 New Orleans residents who are still displaced. I looked at the numbers and was shocked to find that displaced voter turnout was probably only about 7%-9% (and almost certainly no higher than 15%)!
Several weeks ago, John Bonifaz wrote, Hurricane Katrina exposed to the nation and the world the sad reality that too many of our citizens are locked out of the political process and their voices, therefore, go unheard. In the midst of the ongoing struggle Katrina victims face to rebuild their lives, we ought to ensure that we are doing everything possible to protect their right to vote. Massachusetts can and should be leading the way.
What did Massachusetts do, and what could we have done?

There are only a couple of weeks left to gather signatures to get John Bonifaz on the ballot! We need 5,000 certified signatures from Democratic and unenrolled registered Massachusetts voters. Our goal: Collect twice as many as we need, to make sure that even if many of them are not certified, John will be safely on the ballot this September.
This weekend is a great time for you to help us reach this goal.
I spoke to some of our friends in western Massachusetts, and heard that they're planning to collect signatures for Bonifaz in Northampton and Shelburne Falls on Saturday night, and Amherst on Sunday. Want to join them, help out, and meet Bonifaz supporters in the valley? Or, want to collect signatures where you live, somewhere else in the state?
Read on... and tell us about your plans by posting a comment!

We are excited to launch today this new website for the campaign. As I continue to travel around our state, it is clear that there is a hunger for a new kind of politics, a politics that is open and transparent, that is independent of big money interests, that returns voters to power, and that requires pro-active leaders willing to stand up and fight for the basic principles of our democracy. With this new site, our blog is now interactive and we invite your comments, questions, and participation. I look forward to hearing from you and I hope to see you on the campaign trail!
